If you are considering liposuction, knowing what to expect from the recovery process is important. However, you will still need to take some time off from work, and refrain from strenuous activity for awhile.

Downtime After Liposuction

If your liposuction procedure was minor, you may only need to take 2 to 3 days off work. For other patients, we recommend scheduling about a week of total downtime. Liposuction is one of the easiest cosmetic surgery procedures to recover from, but you should allow yourself enough time to heal properly.

Dr. Rifai may provide you with a compression garment to help your skin heal as smoothly as possible.

Swelling and Exercise After Liposuction

Swelling is an inevitable result of liposuction, but it will gradually diminish over time. In most cases, swelling starts to dramatically reduce about 7 to 10 days after liposuction. It will continue to reduce over the next 3 to 5 months before it completely goes away, but the swelling should be minor during this time.

After about two weeks, you can start to return to your normal exercise routine, slowly ramping it back up to your prior activity level. Be careful not to dive into strenuous exercise too quickly. If it is causing discomfort, you should reduce your exercise level. Dr. Rifai will follow up with you and recommend when it is safe for you to resume your normal exercise routine.
