Tummy Tuck Recovery: How Long Will it Take?

Your initial recovery period should last anywhere from two to three weeks. During this timeframe, you can expect some amount of bruising and swelling in the surgical area. Make sure you allow your body plenty of downtime in the first few days so the initial healing process isn’t interrupted.

If your job does not require a lot of physical activity, you can expect to return to work within a couple of weeks. However, every patient heals differently. We will follow up with you to see how your recovery is progressing, and recommend the best time to return to your regular activities.

Swelling After a Tummy Tuck

Swelling is a normal part of the healing process after an abdominoplasty. The majority of your swelling will diminish within the first six weeks, revealing your final healed results. However, some swelling can still linger for a full three months after abdominoplasty. Patience is key; it will eventually disappear completely.

Exercise After a Tummy Tuck

Generally speaking, you should avoid all strenuous activity for the first two months after surgery. However, it can be helpful to return to very light exercise after about two weeks. Gentle walks can help stimulate blood flow and facilitate proper healing. But take care – if you put too much strain on your abdominal muscles too soon, you will not only cause yourself discomfort, you may also lengthen the recovery process.
