How is Breast Augmentation Performed?

Breast augmentation surgeries are performed under general anesthesia in a hospital or surgery center. Prior to surgery, you will complete a thorough consultation with Dr. Rifai to plan for your surgery and discuss your ideal results. During a consultation, Dr. Rifai will help guide you towards your best options, considering factors including:

• The type of implants used (saline or silicone)
• The size and shape of your implants
• Implant placement
• Incision location and technique

During surgery, there are several incision techniques that may be used. These include periareolar (around the nipple and areola), inframammary (at the breast crease), or transaxillary (in the underarm). After making incisions, Dr. Rifai will then create a pocket for the implant and place it either below the pectoral muscle or below the breast tissue. Implant placement varies depending on your ideal results. Finally, incisions are closed with sutures.
In most cases, breast augmentation surgery can be completed in about one to two hours.

Recovery After Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is performed as an outpatient surgery. This means that candidates are free to return home the same day as their procedure with a trusted family member, friend, or caretaker who can drive them and attend to their needs. Some soreness, swelling, redness, and bruising are normal during the initial healing period. You will be instructed to wear a supportive surgical bra and take pain medication as prescribed throughout the healing process. Most patients require a week of downtime or less; those who work physically demanding jobs may require some additional downtime. Through postoperative appointments, Dr. Rifai will monitor your healing and advise when you can return to strenuous activity. Patients typically see their final results beginning about three weeks after their procedure as swelling resolves and the breast implants begin to “settle.”
