It has become common knowledge that the best way to prevent premature aging and unsightly wrinkles includes preventative cosmetic injections, but many young patients worry about the added volume they don’t yet need. Fortunately, modern advancement in injectable research has led to the creation of Xeomin—an injectable designed to reduce lines and prevent wrinkles without adding facial volume.
What is Xeomin?
Approved by the FDA, Xeomin is a neuromuscular blocker designed with a multitude of cosmetic concerns in mind. Not only that but Xeomin is commonly recommended as a solution for multiple medical conditions that have been unresponsive to other treatment options. Some of the common concerns Xeomin can combat include:
- Prevention of wrinkles
- Assistance with chronic migraines
- Treatment of frown lines
- Management of urinary incontinence
- Treatment of brow lines
Xeomin is an injectable treatment option with no downtime or pain— patients can expect to see results a few days after the procedure and will notice their continued improvement. Xeomin will not interfere with your daily life or routine and is a great option for almost anyone.

Who is a Good Candidate for Xeomin?
Xeomin works best as a preventative injection, so ideal candidates will begin treatment prior to the appearance of sagging skin, lines, or wrinkles. Since Xeomin does not treat hyperpigmentation, these injections can benefit all skin types as well as textures. Other candidates include patients with an overactive bladder or chronic migraines that have not responded to other treatment options. You must be at least 18 years old to start Xeomin treatment and should be honest about any allergies or medical conditions that could lead to possible complications. Even if you’ve already begun to notice the appearance of wrinkles and lines, Xeomin treatments may still benefit you. Dr. Rifai may initially recommend an alternative facial treatment to help diminish current lines and wrinkles, but after lines have faded, Xeomin may be encouraged to keep lines from reappearing.
The Xeomin Treatment Process
Similar to Botox, Xeomin is a botulinum toxin type A compound designed to relax muscles and reduce premature aging. Unlike Botox, however, Xeomin is a purified botulinum toxin free of additive proteins that promote volume restoration. Most fillers and injectables incorporate these proteins to promote collagen production which, in turn, restores volume to the face and tightens sagging skin. Many potential patients are wary of the added volume and feel it is unnecessary for their current skin elasticity. Xeomin is their solution—injecting the same neuromuscular blocker that reduces wrinkles without plumping the treated area.
After Xeomin
Xeomin is not only an outpatient procedure but requires no downtime. You may notice some redness and swelling after the treatment, but these symptoms are minor and should only cause minimal discomfort. Dr. Rifai encourages you to avoid touching the treated area or engaging in strenuous activity for 24 hours, but you can continue your daily routine and work schedule right away. If your job is physically demanding, you may need to take a few days off to ensure there are no risks to your health to results. Some results may take slightly longer than others, but most patients will see their results clearly within four days of treatment. The results will last anywhere from three to six months depending on each individual and will require regular treatment to maintain the results. Your long-term treatment plan will be discussed in your initial consultation and adjusted as needed throughout your journey with Birmingham Cosmetic Surgery.
