Multiple skin conditions can be improved by stimulating collagen production. This includes signs of aging like fine lines and wrinkles as well as common problems that can occur at any age like acne scars. By creating controlled micro-injuries in the skin, it is possible to stimulate new collagen production by triggering the body’s natural healing process. At Birmingham Cosmetic Surgery, Dr. Rifai and our team of skincare experts utilize microneedling to address a range of skin concerns. This allows Detroit area patients to enjoy more youthful, rejuvenated skin.
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling is a process of creating controlled micro-injuries by applying ultrafine needles to the skin. This is a minimally invasive procedure also known as collagen induction therapy. This can be used to treat a wide range of conditions and pairs well with topical treatments, as the microchannels created by microneedling allow for deeper absorption.
Who is a Good Candidate for Microneedling?
Microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment option that can be used to treat a wide range of skin concerns. This includes:
- Scarring, including acne scars
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Enlarged pores
- Hyperpigmentation and dark spots
- Uneven skin tone
- Poor skin elasticity
- Stretch marks
- Alopecia and hair thinning
Microneedling is not suitable for all patients. Those who have health concerns including psoriasis, eczema, or a history of poor scarring such as keloids should avoid microneedling. In some cases, the procedure may not be recommended for patients with darker skin tones to avoid damage. During a consultation, Dr. Rifai will review your health history and goals for the procedure to determine whether microneedling is your best option.

Meet Dr. RifaiThe Microneedling Procedure
Prior to microneedling, the skin will be thoroughly cleansed. In some cases, a topical numbing agent may be applied; however, this is not always necessary. A pen-like tool containing sterilized microneedles will be directed to the skin. This creates pinpricks that are so small they are typically impossible to see with the naked eye. The procedure is typically well-tolerated, though patients can feel the slight pinpricks. Microneedling treatment takes approximately 30 minutes to complete, though this can vary depending on the size of the treatment area. Following treatment, serums or other topical products can be applied.
What Our Patients Say
After Microneedling
Microneedling does not require any downtime. However, some visible side effects will likely be present. Common side effects include redness and some swelling. The skin will also feel sensitive; most patients describe this as similar to a sunburn. After receiving microneedling, it is important to avoid direct sun exposure and apply SPF.
Microneedling results can be seen beginning a few days after the procedure, as the micro-injuries heal and collagen production begins. The skin should be visibly smoother, firmer, and rejuvenated.
Most patients require multiple microneedling sessions to meet their goal results. Microneedling results are not permanent, however, they are long-lasting. During your consultation, a long-term treatment plan including maintenance treatments can be discussed.
