Rhinoplasty is among the most common facial plastic surgery procedures in Detroit and across the United States. This is for good reason—the nose is the center of the face and the most three-dimensional feature, making even small changes to its appearance significant in your overall look. With over thirty years of experience, Dr. Rouchdi Rifai offers customizable rhinoplasty procedures, meeting various patient requests and goal results possible. Regardless of your concerns about your nose, Dr. Rifai can create a beautiful and flattering result.
What is a Rhinoplasty?
A rhinoplasty is a plastic surgery procedure commonly called a “nose job” or simply “nose surgery.” While rhinoplasties are considered cosmetic in nature, they can also improve breathing for many patients. Rhinoplasties are performed to address a range of concerns, including:
- A wide, drooping, or asymmetrical nasal tip
- The general size of the nose
- A bump on the bridge of the nose
- Enlarged or flared nostrils
- The facial profile
- Unflattering proportions of facial features, such as the angle between the nose, mouth, and chin
- Deviated septum
The Rhinoplasty Procedure
Rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia or, in some cases, IV sedation. The surgery is performed on an outpatient basis for most patients. Dr. Rifai utilizes two techniques for rhinoplasties: open and closed.
In an open rhinoplasty, incisions are made across the columella, or the piece of tissue which separates the nostrils. This allows Dr. Rifai more complete visualization as he sculpts and reshapes the nose and is generally recommended for those who wish to adjust the nasal tip or dorsal structures. While a small external scar will be visible as a result of this incision pattern, it will be inconspicuous.
In a closed rhinoplasty, incisions are made within the nostrils, allowing patients to enjoy results with no visible scarring. This technique is best for repositioning and adjusting the overall nose contour and is often recommended for patients who are concerned about the bridge of the nose or the overall size.
In some cases, donor cartilage or tissue from areas such as the ears may be necessary to complete a rhinoplasty. These considerations can be discussed during a consultation.
Who is a Good Candidate for a Rhinoplasty?
Most patients who are unhappy with the appearance of their nose are good candidates for the surgery. In addition, patients who experience difficulty breathing or symptoms such as snoring due to a deviated septum often make good candidates for the surgery. Before undergoing a rhinoplasty, you should be in good overall health. This includes refraining from smoking. During a consultation, Dr. Rifai will review your health history to determine whether you are a good candidate.

Meet Dr. RifaiRecovery After Rhinoplasty
After a rhinoplasty, patients can expect some swelling, bruising, and redness. A splint may be in place to protect the nose as it heals. Patients may experience some discomfort, but pain medication can be prescribed. Most rhinoplasty patients require at least a week of downtime to rest and recover after the surgery. Results begin to be noticeable at about two weeks after the surgery as swelling starts to subside. However, some degree of residual swelling can be present for up to a year after the procedure.
