At Birmingham Cosmetic Surgery, our team of cosmetic experts offers a range of minimally invasive treatments, allowing patients to enjoy more youthful and vibrant skin. One excellent option for a range of common concerns is microdermabrasion. This popular treatment thoroughly exfoliates the skin, improving skin health and appearance both at the surface and below. Detroit area patients can turn to Dr. Rouchdi Rifai and his team for superior microdermabrasion results.
What is Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive method of rejuvenating the skin by using tiny crystals to exfoliate the skin. At the same time, gentle suction removes dead skin cells and other impurities. By thoroughly exfoliating the skin, microdermabrasion reveals a naturally youthful appearance, smooths the surface, and stimulates new collagen production. This means that patients can enjoy smoother, firmer, and generally more youthful-looking skin with long-term results.
How is Microdermabrasion Performed?
Prior to microdermabrasion, it is best if patients refrain from smoking or taking medications and supplements that have anti-inflammatory or blood-thinning properties.
Microdermabrasion treatment typically takes about 30-60 minutes to complete. During the treatment, a microdermabrasion handpiece is directed to the treatment area, where micro-crystals will be used to thoroughly exfoliate. At the same time, a mild suction device will remove dead skin cells and other debris from the surface. Microdermabrasion is a pain-free procedure. As needed, your provider may then apply skin care products to enhance your results.

Meet Dr. RifaiWho is a Good Candidate for Microdermabrasion?
Most patients are good candidates for microdermabrasion, as the treatment is non-invasive and requires no downtime. Often, microdermabrasion can be used as an alternative for patients who wish to avoid more invasive treatments. Many conditions can be treated using microdermabrasion. These include:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Sun damage
- Uneven pigmentation, age spots, sun spots, and freckles
- Stretch marks
- Scarring, including acne scars
- Dullness or dryness
- Enlarged pores
- Rough or uneven texture
Microdermabrasion can be suitable for multiple treatment areas. This includes the face, neck, chest, or hands. During a consultation, Dr. Rifai or our expert providers will evaluate your concerns, skin type, and goals for the procedure to determine whether microdermabrasion is right for you.
After Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion does not require downtime. Results should be immediately visible, with smoother and softer skin. Following treatment, it is normal for the skin to be somewhat sensitive. It is recommended that patients use moisturizers, avoid direct sun exposure, and apply SPF as directed. For a majority of microdermabrasion patients, results can be seen for up to one month after the procedure.
While a single treatment will improve the appearance of your skin, it is generally recommended to undergo routine treatments to maintain the results. This allows you to gradually improve results over time and enjoy smoother and more youthful skin long-term. For most patients, treatments are recommended approximately every two to three weeks. During your consultation, a customized treatment plan can be determined.
