Juvederm is among the most well-known injectable fillers, and for good reason. The Juvederm family of products has a wide range of uses and allows patients to enhance their appearances or resolve signs of aging without the commitment, side effects, and downtime of cosmetic surgery. In the Detroit area, patients often turn to Birmingham Cosmetic Surgery for their Juvederm injections. Our team includes board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Rouchdi Rifai and master injectors, allowing patients to enjoy superior results.
What is Juvederm?
Juvederm is an injectable treatment that works using hyaluronic acid. This is a naturally occurring molecule that binds to water, creating a plump and hydrated appearance in the skin. The treatment is primarily used to reduce fine lines and wrinkles by restoring lost volume, effectively filling in wrinkles for a more youthful appearance. In addition, Juvederm can be used to nonsurgically augment areas including the lips.
There are several types of Juvederm available, each suited to various treatment areas and purposes. These include:
- Juvederm Voluma XC
- Juvederm XC
- Juvederm Vollure XC
- Juvederm Ultra XC
- Juvederm Volbella XC
Who is a Candidate for Juvederm?
Most patients who are interested in resolving lines and wrinkles or augmenting the face without surgery are good candidates for Juvederm injections. Juvederm can be used for a range of purposes, including:
- Filling in lines, wrinkles, and folds
- Smoothing smile lines, frown lines, or other wrinkles
- Adding volume to the cheeks
- Plumping lips
Juvederm patients should be generally healthy prior to undergoing injections. For this reason, Dr. Rifai or your nurse injector will review your health history during a consultation. They will also assess your concerns and work to understand your goals for the procedure. In some cases, they may recommend another treatment option, including other injectables such as Botox or Radiesse.

Meet Dr. RifaiThe Juvederm Injection Process
After your consultation, Juvederm injections can often take place on the same day. Prior to your treatment, a numbing agent may be applied. However, this is not typically necessary, as small needles are used and only a brief pinprick sensation is expected. On average, Juvederm injections take only 15 minutes to complete.
After Juvederm Injections
Results are immediately noticeable after Juvederm injections, and no downtime is needed. However, some minor side effects are typical. These include redness, swelling, itching, and some sensitivity. Side effects should subside within 24 hours of treatment at most. Patients are instructed to avoid smoking, drinking alcohol, or strenuous activity such as exercise for at least 24 hours after receiving Juvederm injections. This reduces the risk of complications including bruising or bleeding.
Juvederm results typically last between six and nine months. Over time, the body will naturally and safely metabolize the product. As needed or desired, maintenance injections can be administered to keep up the results. A long-term treatment plan can be discussed during your initial consultation.
