Whether from age, acne, pregnancy, or a variety of other conditions, our skin’s texture can change over time. When it was once baby soft, it may now be uneven and textured due to scarring or aging. Microneedling is an innovative addition to a skincare routine that can help treat textural concerns while stimulating collagen growth and healing. At Birmingham Cosmetic Surgery, we are committed to offering less invasive treatment options that help to restore softness and youth to your skin.
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling is a technique that is used in conjunction with other skin care treatments to help target textural concerns like scarring, fine lines, wrinkles, or enlarged pores. A device with thin sterile needles is rolled across the face to make small punctures that stimulate collagen production that comes in conjunction with the body’s wound healing response.
Microneedling can be beneficial on its own or with added treatments like platelet-rich plasma (PRP). PRP is composed of plasma taken directly from the patient’s blood. The rich coagulate that is separated from the blood is then spread on the face over the microneedling punctures. The PRP intensifies the healing and regeneration of the skin, making the treatment all the more effective.

In order to obtain the PRP, your provider will draw a small sample of blood. The vile is then placed in a centrifuge where it is spun until the platelet-rich plasma has separated from the rest of the blood. A syringe collects the PRP, and it is then applied to the treatment area. Think of PRP as the most powerful youth-restoring and healing serum on the market, but it is made by your own body.
The tiny punctures created by the microneedling device make it so that the PRP can more quickly and effectively penetrate the skin. You always dig a hole before you plant a flower, right? Microneedling works in the same way whether you are finishing the treatment with PRP or another beneficial serum.
Who is a Good Candidate for Microneedling with PRP
Because PRP is naturally derived from your own body, treatment with PRP poses less of a risk of sensitivity or reaction. Microneedling is a great option for patients looking to treat the following skin concerns:
- Acne scars
- Fine lines
- Wrinkles
- Loose Skin
- Enlarged Pores
Because punctures in the skin are made with the microneedling device and a blood draw is required to obtain PRP, those with bleeding disorders should consult their doctors before booking their appointment.
What Our Patients Say
After Microneedling
Microneedling, with or without PRP, is a minimally invasive treatment with redness and possible skin peeling that can last about 5-10 days, but an ice pack can help relieve any associated discomfort. Because your skin is in a more vulnerable state after microneedling, it is best to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and you will not be able to wear makeup for about 24 hours after the procedure.
