Shaving, waxing, or plucking the hair can be tedious and, in some cases, painful. Both men and women often wish for a more permanent solution for hair removal. In many cases, laser hair removal can be a great option. While technologies of the past limited the capabilities of laser hair removal, advanced options mean that a wider range of patients can now benefit from permanent hair removal. At Birmingham Cosmetic Surgery, our team of cosmetic experts led by board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Rifai offers the best in laser hair removal for Detroit area patients.
What is Laser Hair Removal?
Laser hair removal is a process of minimizing or completely removing unwanted hair using concentrated beams of light. This laser energy is absorbed by the melanin, or pigment, within the hair. Through this process, the hair follicles are damaged such that they can no longer grow hair as normal. This means that hair growth is stopped, delayed, or reduced. Laser hair removal can be used to target hair in a range of areas, including the:
- Legs
- Bikini area
- Underarms
- Arms
- Chest
- Back
- Face
What is the Laser Hair Removal Procedure Like?
Prior to laser hair removal, patients should avoid spending time in the sun, using sunless tanning products, shaving, plucking, or waxing the treatment area, or taking blood-thinning medications. During the laser hair removal procedure, a hand-held laser device is directed towards the skin so it can administer the laser energy to the hair follicles. Depending on the device used, a cooling device may also be applied to maintain your comfort throughout the procedure. You will also wear protective eyewear throughout the treatment. As the laser energy is applied, you will feel a sensation similar to a warm pinprick. This should be tolerable.
Most patients require between two and six total laser hair removal treatment sessions to reach their goal results. The time between treatments can range between four and twelve weeks apart depending on the rate of hair growth and treatment area. During a consultation, your unique treatment plan can be determined.

Meet Dr. RifaiWho is a Candidate for Laser Hair Removal?
In the past, laser hair removal was only available to patients with dark hair and light skin. Today, the treatment is available for a wider range of patients, including those with darker skin tones, as technology has improved. During a consultation, a laser hair removal expert will evaluate your hair and skin type to determine whether laser hair removal is a suitable option for you. It is important to note that patients with tattoos in the treatment area or certain skin conditions should not undergo the treatment.
After Laser Hair Removal
Following laser hair removal, you can expect some sensitivity and redness in the treated area. This should dissipate within a few hours. Applying ice to the treated area can help reduce redness and any minor swelling. Following treatment, it is important to avoid direct sun exposure, applying SPF as directed.
