Fine lines, wrinkles, and a lack of volume in key areas of the face can result in an aged appearance, causing patients to look older than they feel. While many patients wish to resolve these common signs of aging, they also want to avoid the side effects and downtime associated with surgery. Detroit area patients have many options when it comes to injectables to reduce signs of aging. At Birmingham Cosmetic Surgery, our master injections often recommend Radiesse.
What is Radiesse?
Radiesse is a unique dermal filler option that works using biocompatible ingredients that stimulate natural collagen. The active ingredient in Radiesse is calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHA), which works immediately upon injection and is naturally occurring within the body, making it non-toxic. Radiesse is also a long-lasting option thanks to the production of natural collagen. The treatment is best for areas such as the nose and mouth.
Who is a Candidate for Radiesse?
Patients who have noticeable volume loss resulting in lines and wrinkles in the mid-face are often good candidates for Radiesse. In addition, the treatment can be used to non-surgically adjust the contours of the face. Some concerns that can be treated using Radiesse include:
- Smile lines
- Parentheses lines
- Nasolabial folds
- Marionette lines
- Low cheekbones
- Facial hollows
- Moderate facial scars
Before receiving treatment with Radiesse, your injector will review your concerns and goals for the procedure as well as your health history. Patients who have severe allergies or certain medical conditions, such as active infections, should not receive Radiesse injections.
What is the Radiesse Injection Process Like?
After completing a consultation, Radiesse injections can often take place the same day. First, a numbing treatment may be administered. However, often, a local anesthetic is typically combined with Radiesse in the syringe. After marking the appropriate injection sites, a small needle is then used to administer Radiesse. Discomfort during this process is minimal. On average, Radiesse injections can be completed within just about 15 minutes.

Meet Dr. RifaiAfter Radiesse Injections
Radiesse results are often immediately noticeable after receiving injections. No downtime is required, though some minor side effects may be present. These include redness, slight swelling, some sensitivity, and bruising. Patients should take care to follow aftercare instructions, but can typically apply makeup to the injection sites to disguise any redness or bruising. Visible side effects should last no more than 24-36 hours.
Full results from Radiesse can be seen about a week after injections as collagen production takes place. While these results are long-lasting, they are not permanent. For most patients, results can be seen for about a year, but this can vary anywhere between six months and two years. During a consultation, you can discuss reasonable expectations with your injector.
After Radiesse has subsided, you can receive routine maintenance injections to keep up your results.
