The neck is often an overlooked area, however, it can start to show signs of aging even earlier than the face. Due to consistent sun exposure and frequent movement, and with patients often skipping the neck when it comes to skincare throughout their lifetimes, the neck often shows wrinkles, sagging, and drooping. Patients often feel insecure about neck bands, loose skin commonly called a “turkey gobbler” or “turkey neck,” the appearance of a “double chin,” and more. Thankfully, a neck lift can help. With over thirty years of experience, Dr. Rouchdi Rifai offers excellent neck lift results for Detroit area patients.
What is a Neck Lift?
A neck lift is a plastic surgery procedure designed to improve the appearance of the neck when visible signs of aging are present. This includes common concerns such as:
- Loose skin
- “Turkey neck”
- Neck bands
- “Double chin”
- Fine lines and wrinkles
A neck lift tightens the tissues and reduces loose, excess skin in the area. In addition, liposuction may be used to reduce excess fat.
How is a Neck Lift Performed?
A neck lift is performed under general anesthesia or IV sedation. To complete the procedure, Dr. Rifai will make small incisions around the ears and just beneath the chin. Through these incisions, he will remove excess skin and tighten the muscles to create a smoother appearance. As needed, liposuction can also be used to reduce excess fat in the area. With these steps complete, the skin will be redraped to reduce wrinkles and sagging. Finally, the incisions are closed using sutures.
Neck lifts are often paired with other procedures to enhance results. For example, a facelift paired with a neck lift more completely addresses signs of aging in the lower portions of the face. Botox may also be beneficial in reducing neck bands, even after a surgical neck lift. During a consultation, Dr. Rifai can discuss methods to customize your procedure and create the results you are looking for.
Who is a Candidate for a Neck Lift?
Good candidates for neck lifts typically see sagging, loose skin, and wrinkles in the neck. They may have common concerns including turkey neck, neck bands, or a double chin. Before undergoing surgery, patients should have realistic expectations for their results, which can be discussed with Dr. Rifai during a consultation. In addition, patients should be generally healthy overall. Dr. Rifai will review your health history to ensure that you are a safe candidate for the surgery.

Meet Dr. RifaiRecovery After a Neck Lift
Neck lifts are typically performed on an outpatient basis, meaning that patients may return home after the surgery with a trusted family member, friend, or other caretaker. Most neck lift patients require at least a week of downtime to rest and recover after the surgery. Normal side effects include swelling, bruising, and redness. Pain medication may be prescribed to keep you comfortable through the initial healing process. Dr. Rifai will also advise you to avoid strenuous activity such as exercise for at least three weeks after the surgery.
