The eyes are a key feature, allowing you to express yourself, and they are typically the first thing that people notice when they look at your face. They are also susceptible to noticeable signs of aging, as the skin of the eyelids is delicate and faces frequent movement over time. Wrinkles, sagging, or drooping in this area can make you look tired or even angry when you are not. What’s worse, excessively sagging eyelids can even cause vision loss. Eyelid lift surgery can help. Through an eyelid lift, or blepharoplasty, Dr. Rouchdi Rifai at Birmingham Cosmetic Surgery helps Detroit area patients regain a youthful and rejuvenated appearance.

What is an Eyelid Lift?

An eyelid lift is a plastic surgery procedure also known as a blepharoplasty. This surgery can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. The surgery is intended to smooth wrinkles and reduce sagging or drooping by removing excess skin or fatty deposits from the eye area. In addition to reducing signs of aging, eyelid lifts can also refine the shape or appearance of the eye for patients of any age.

How is an Eyelid Lift Performed?

Eyelid lifts are performed under general anesthesia or IV sedation. In an upper eyelid lift, incisions are made to the crease of the eyelid. Through these incisions, excess skin and fatty deposits are removed. The underlying tissues of the eyelid are also tightened for a smoother appearance.

In a lower eyelid lift, incisions are made at the lower lash line. This allows for scarring to be well concealed. As in an upper eyelid lift, excess skin and fat are removed and the underlying muscle and tissues are tightened and repositioned.

In either an upper or lower blepharoplasty, fine sutures are then used to close incisions and an ointment is applied to maintain comfort following the surgery.

Who is a Candidate for an Eyelid Lift?

Most patients who are generally healthy overall and have unwanted wrinkles or sagging skin at the upper or lower eyelids are good candidates for an eyelid lift. This is especially true for patients who have some degree of vision loss due to excessively drooping lids. For these patients, the procedure may be considered medically necessary and partially or fully covered by health insurance.

Prior to an eye lift, it is important that you are in generally good health. This includes proper eye health. Before you can undergo eyelid lift surgery, Dr. Rifai will likely suggest that you have an examination with an ophthalmologist. He will also review your health history to ensure that you are a safe candidate for eyelid lift surgery.

Recovery After an Eyelid Lift

Following an eyelid lift, patients can expect swelling, redness, and bruising. The eyes will likely be sensitive to light, so it is typically recommended to wear sunglasses in the earliest stages of healing. Patients often find that cold compresses help to alleviate swelling and bruising as well. Dr. Rifai can prescribe pain medication to maintain your comfort through the healing process. Most patients feel rested enough to return to work or other normal routines within a week or less of the surgery. Sutures are typically removed one week after an eyelid lift.

“I had 2 surgeries with Dr rafai (December 2022 and March 2023) both went very smoothly and both he and his staff were available and able to answer questions I had throughout my recovery. I’m happy with the results and will use Dr rafai again if I decide to proceed with future surgeries. (I previously had bariatric surgery and have a lot of excess skin but chose to only address my torso/abdomen at this time.)”
