TCA & Phenol Facial Chemical Peels

contact us

The natural aging process coupled with sun damage and other environmental factors over time can mean that patients look older or more tired than they feel. Sagging or drooping skin, poor elasticity, fine lines, and wrinkles are all common concerns. Thankfully, chemical peels are available to help patients achieve an overall more youthful look by resurfacing the skin, revealing a more vibrant and youthful look underneath. At Birmingham Cosmetic Surgery, Dr. Rouchdi Rifai and our team of cosmetic experts offer TCA & Phenol chemical peels for Detroit area patients.

What is a TCA & Phenol Chemical Peel?

Chemical peels work by applying one of two acids to the skin: TCA (trichloroacetic acid) or Phenol (carbolic acid). When applied, these acids cause the outermost layer of skin cells to be shed. This has powerful anti-aging effects, triggering new collagen production and revealing an overall healthier, more youthful, and more vibrant surface once healing has been completed. TCA & Phenol chemical peels are also available in a variety of options, ranging from light or superficial peels, which require minimal downtime, to deep peels, which offer exceptional transformative effects.

Who is a Good Candidate for a TCA & Phenol Chemical Peel?

TCA & Phenol chemical peels are versatile treatment options suitable for a range of candidates and concerns. TCA & Phenol chemical peels can be used to treat patients with:

  • Sun damage (sunspots or brown spots)
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Fine lines
  • Wrinkles
  • Scarring, such as acne scars
  • Rough skin or uneven texture
  • Skin laxity and poor elasticity

Some patients with more extreme signs of aging, including excess loose skin, may be best suited to a surgical procedure rather than a chemical peel to achieve the results they are looking for. TCA & Phenol chemical peels are not recommended for patients with certain skin conditions or medical concerns including active infections, eczema, dermatitis, and rosacea. In some cases, patients with darker skin tones may also be advised to choose another treatment option to avoid unnecessary damage to the skin. During a consultation, Dr. Rifai will review your health history as well as your concerns and treatment goals in order to determine your best possible treatment plan.

The TCA & Phenol Chemical Peel Procedure

During a TCA or Phenol chemical peel procedure, the skin is first thoroughly cleansed. As needed, a local anesthetic may also be applied to maintain your comfort through the procedure. This depends on the products used and the depth of your chemical peel. The TCA or Phenol solution is then applied to the skin and carefully timed. Fans may be directed to your skin to provide a cooling sensation through this process. Dr. Rifai will then apply a neutralizing solution before cleansing the skin once more. Skin care products including SPF are then applied to help nourish the skin and support proper healing.

After a TCA & Phenol Chemical Peel

Immediately after receiving TCA & Phenol chemical peels, patients’ skin is covered with Vaseline or similar products to help protect the area as it heals. Side effects vary, but generally include swelling, redness, and sensitivity in the first days following the treatment. The skin will then begin to peel as the outermost layers of skin cells are shed. The underlying new skin will appear pink or flushed initially. Full healing and more youthful, vibrant skin is typically noticeable within 2-8 weeks of the treatment. Effects are more or less permanent with proper skincare following TCA & Phenol chemical peels.
