Over time, patients often notice sun damage and normal signs of aging including brown spots, irregular texture, wrinkles, fine lines, and more. At any age, patients may also notice common concerns like rosacea or acne scars. IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light, can help resolve these issues by administering rapid pulses of light to heat the underlying layers of the skin, stimulating new collagen production for an overall more youthful appearance. At Birmingham Cosmetic Surgery, Detroit-area patients can enjoy the benefits of IPL Photofacial with board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Rifai.
What is IPL Photofacial?
An IPL Photofacial is a minimally invasive facial treatment that uses light energy to stimulate collagen production. This is similar to a laser facial treatment. IPL Photofacial is useful for a wide range of common skin concerns and requires minimal downtime.
How is an IPL Photofacial Performed?
An IPL Photofacial takes approximately 45-90 minutes to complete. Dr. Rifai will first cleanse the treatment area and apply a cooling gel to maintain your comfort throughout the procedure. The IPL handpiece is then used to direct the pulses of light energy to the skin. This process can cause some minor discomfort, however, most patients will primarily feel a sensation of heat during their procedure. With the procedure complete, Dr. Rifai will cleanse the skin once again and apply a sunblock to protect the skin following IPL. As needed, cool compresses may also be applied to the skin.
Most patients require at least five sessions of IPL to reach ideal results. Maintenance treatments are also recommended so patients can enjoy their results long-term. During a consultation, Dr. Rifai will recommend a custom treatment plan.

Meet Dr. RifaiWho is a Good Candidate for IPL Photofacial?
Most patients who have signs of sun damage or other common skin concerns are good candidates for IPL. The treatment can be a less-invasive alternative to surgical procedures for patients with less pronounced aging signs or a complement to options like facelifts. Common concerns that can be treated using IPL include:
- Uneven coloring and hyperpigmentation
- Redness, rosacea, and visible blood vessels
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Skin laxity
- Melasma
- Acne scars
- Enlarged pores
IPL targets melanin within the skin, which means that patients with darker skin tones are not good candidates due to the risk of damage. During a consultation, Dr. Rifai will evaluate your skin type and concerns to determine if you are a good candidate.
IPL can be used in several areas, including the:
- Face
- Neck
- Chest
- Hands
After an IPL Photofacial
There is no downtime required after an IPL Photofacial. However, some patients choose a brief period of social downtime, as visible side effects including redness are possible. However, these can typically be covered with makeup shortly after the treatment. Patients should take care to follow Dr. Rifai’s instructions, including applying SPF and avoiding direct sun exposure.
