At any age or weight, excess fat deposits can cause the appearance of a “double chin” or poorly-defined jawline. This is especially true for patients as they age, but can also occur in younger patients due to genetics. Several options may be available to resolve this issue and create a more flattering jawline and neck, including liposuction. For Detroit-area patients, Dr. Rifai offers neck liposuction with sculpted and natural-looking results. Patients can turn to Birmingham Cosmetic Surgery for their best neck contouring options, including neck liposuction.
What is Neck Liposuction?
Neck liposuction is a plastic surgery procedure in which excess fat is permanently removed from the neck and below the chin by suctioning it away. This is typically done to reduce the appearance of a double chin or to resolve visible signs of aging. Neck liposuction is commonly performed alongside other procedures including a neck lift or facelift to address signs of aging in multiple areas for a more cohesive result. The procedure is also sometimes recommended as an alternative to Kybella, an injectable treatment which reduces fat below the chin. During a consultation, Dr. Rifai will review all of your options and recommend the best treatment for your needs and goals.
How is Neck Liposuction Performed?
Neck liposuction may be completed under general anesthesia or IV sedation. The procedure is performed by first making a small incision in the lower jaw. Through this incision, a thin tube known as a cannula is inserted. The cannula is used to break apart fat before suctioning it away. Dr. Rifai takes care to strategically remove fat for a sculpted appearance. After removing an adequate amount of fat to reach your goal results, the incisons are closed using sutures.
Who is a Candidate for Neck Liposuction?
Most patients who have excess deposits of fat below the chin or at the neck with good skin elasticity are good candidates for neck liposuction. Those who have poor skin elasticity may be better suited to options such as a neck lift. It is important to note that neck liposuction is not a replacement for a healthy diet and exercise, and that patients should be at a healthy and stable weight before undergoing the procedure. Dr. Rifai will review your health history and determine whether you are a safe candidate for the surgery.

Meet Dr. RifaiRecovery After Neck Liposuction
After neck liposuction, patients recover relatively quickly. Common symptoms include swelling, bruising, and redness. Patients typically experience only minimal discomfort after their procedure. Dr. Rifai may prescribe pain medications or instruct you to use cold compresses to minimize swelling and bruising. Neck liposuction patients typically require a week or less of downtime before returning to normal routines such including work or school. Additional downtime from strenuous activity such as exercise may be recommended.
