Surgical procedures are not always necessary to reach the anti-aging results that patients are looking for. While effective, surgical procedures also mean side effects and downtime. For patients in the Detroit area looking to address wrinkles and fine lines, Botox at Birmingham Cosmetic Surgery can be an excellent solution. Our nurse injectors can offer excellent results.
What is Botox?
Botox is an injectable product that works using a purified form of botulinum toxin. When injected, Botox temporarily blocks the nerve receptors, stopping muscles from contracting. This means that it effectively reduces lines and wrinkles caused by repetitive facial expressions. However, advanced injection techniques used by our nurse injectors mean that patients can still freely express themselves—just with fewer wrinkles.

Who is a Good Candidate for Botox?
Many patients who have dynamic wrinkles or lines are good candidates for Botox. The product can be beneficial for:
- Forehead wrinkles
- Vertical eleven lines between the eyebrows
- Crow’s feet
- Smile, laugh, and frown lines
- Deep creases
In addition, Botox can be used to prevent wrinkles from worsening over time. Some patients choose Botox before fine lines are visible as a preventative measure.
While most patients are good candidates for Botox, those with certain health concerns may not be suited to treatment. These include:
- Neurological diseases or disorders that affect the nerves or muscles
- Allergies to Botox Cosmetic ingredients
- Active skin infections
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
During a consultation, Dr. Rifai or our master injectors will review your concerns, health history, and treatment goals to determine whether you are a good candidate for Botox. In some cases, another treatment such as Juvederm injections may better meet your treatment goals.
What is the Botox Injection Process Like?
After completing a consultation, Dr. Rifai or our master injectors will develop a custom treatment plan and determine the appropriate injection sites. As needed, a numbing solution may be applied. However, this is not typically necessary, as fine needles are used to inject the product. Most patients feel only a small pinprick during treatment, which is well-tolerated. Botox injections typically take just 30 minutes or less to complete.
After Botox Injections
Botox requires no downtime. However, patients can expect some minor side effects including redness, swelling, and potential bruising. It is important to avoid rubbing or applying pressure to injection sites prior to receiving injections.
Botox results are not immediately noticeable in most cases. Patients can typically expect reduced wrinkles and fine lines within about one to two days after receiving injections.
Botox results are not permanent. Most patients can expect to see their results for about four months before the muscles regain mobility, causing wrinkles and fine lines to reemerge. Maintenance injections can be scheduled to help keep up results over time. During a consultation, a long-term treatment plan can be discussed.
