Many people wish to have longer, thicker, or darker eyelashes even without the daily application of mascara or false lashes. While these were the only options for many years, today, patients can enjoy naturally darker and thicker eyelashes with Latisse. Latisse is the only FDA-approved medication intended to help patients grow improved eyelashes. This product is available only through a prescription. Detroit area patients can turn to Dr. Rifai at Birmingham Cosmetic Surgery for Latisse treatment.
What is Latisse?
Latisse is a topical treatment that is intended to trigger the growth of longer, thicker, and darker eyelashes. This treatment works using the active ingredient bimatoprost, which affects the growth phase of the eyelash hair cycle. Bimatoprost extends the length of the eyelash growth phase and increases the number of hairs produced through this phase. This means that patients will grow naturally longer lashes and have fuller eyelashes overall. Latisse is the only FDA-approved medication designed for this purpose.
Who is a Candidate for Latisse?
Most patients who want longer, darker, and fuller lashes and have good overall eye health are good candidates for Latisse. The treatment is not advisable for patients who have issues with eye health including active infections such as conjunctivitis, glaucoma, inflammation of the eye or eyelids, upper eyelid infections, or severe allergies. It is also not suitable for patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Before using Latisse, Dr. Rifai will review your health history and goals for treatments to determine whether treatment is right for you. In some cases, it may be recommended to schedule a screening with an ophthalmologist to ensure you are a safe and suitable candidate.

Meet Dr. RifaiHow is Latisse Used?
Latisse is a topical medication that is used at home. Patients simply apply Latisse to the base of the eyelashes nightly. This should be completed for a course of at least 16 weeks. Latisse is a brush-on solution that is easy to apply. During your initial consultation appointment, Dr. Rifai will provide instructions on the proper application so you are prepared to use Latisse at home over the course of your treatment.
Latisse Results
Most patients see results beginning about four weeks into their treatment with Latisse. These results will continue to improve over time, with full results seen at the conclusion of treatment after 16 weeks.
If you stop using Latisse, results will last until the natural lashes are shed; this depends on the length of your natural lash-shedding cycle. As desired, you can continue to use Latisse over time as directed to maintain your results.
Latisse can cause some side effects, though none should be uncomfortable. The most common side effect is darkened skin on the eyelid or potential darkening of the irises of the eyes. When these occur, they tend to be permanent. During a consultation, Dr. Rifai can review risks and realistic expectations.
