Inverted nipples are a relatively common condition, with about 20% of women having inverted nipples from birth. While harmless, it is typical for women to feel self-conscious of the appearance of an inverted nipple. Often, women may wish to correct the appearance of an inverted nipple without altering the rest of the breast. In other cases, women opting for procedures such as a breast augmentation may also want to address the appearance of their inverted nipples. Whatever the case, Dr. Rifai of Birmingham Cosmetic Surgery has the expertise and experience required to correct inverted nipples through a safe and simple plastic surgery procedure.
What is Inverted Nipple Correction Surgery?
Inverted nipple correction surgery is a simple plastic surgery procedure performed to correct the appearance of an inverted nipple. This can be performed on its own or paired with another procedure such as a breast augmentation or areola reduction.
How is Inverted Nipple Correction Surgery Performed?
There are a number of techniques that may be used to correct inverted nipples. During a consultation, Dr. Rifai will determine which techniques will best correct the appearance. The procedure can be completed in about an hour and is typically done under local anesthesia (unless paired with another surgery that requires general anesthesia). To complete an inverted nipple correction, Dr. Rifai focuses on releasing the fibrous tissue which pulls the inverted nipple down. Small incisions are made, typically to the lower nipple. Through these incisions, the fibrous connecting tissues are released. Sutures are then placed strategically to encourage the nipple to heal in a projected shape.

What Our Patients Say
Recovery After Inverted Nipple Surgery
Recovery after inverted nipple correction surgery is minimal. Most patients feel little to no discomfort and face no physical restrictions as they heal following the procedure. No downtime is required for a majority of patients unless the nature of your work is strenuous. Dr. Rifai will provide specific aftercare and recovery instructions. Immediately after the procedure, sutures and bandages will be in place. Sutures can typically be removed one week after the surgery. Some patients may experience a loss of sensation in the nipples. It is also possible to experience a loss in the ability to breastfeed. For some patients with more severe cases, the nipple may return to an inverted position. This can be discussed during your consultation.
