What are varicose veins?
Varicose veins are bulging, twisted veins that appear most commonly on the calves and feet, although they can technically show up on any part of the body. The reason that the lower extremities are more susceptible to this condition is that standing and walking increase the pressure on the veins of the legs.
Varicose veins are quite common and are often just a cosmetic problem. But some individuals may experience symptoms associated with their varicose veins. These symptoms include
- Leg pain
- Muscle cramps
- Itching near the veins
What causes varicose veins?
Varicose veins become more common as we age. This is because the veins gradually lose their elasticity with time. As veins lose elasticity, blood flows retrograde rather than toward the heart and pools in these weak spots.
Pregnancy also dramatically increases the risk of developing varicose veins. The biological changes that enable a fetus to grow within the uterus include a change in circulation patterns that can also cause varicose veins.
Other factors that can place one at an elevated risk of developing varicose veins include
- Family history
- Being female
- Jobs that require prolonged sitting or standing
How are varicose veins treated?
Our custom vein treatments get rid of varicose veins with minimal downtime and little disruption to your schedule.
Dr. RIfai draws from the latest technological developments to deliver state-of-the-art varicose vein treatment. Endovenous laser treatment, or EVLT, is the procedure of choice to get rid of unsightly varicose veins. Unlike older procedures like vein stripping, EVLT relies on a precisely focused laser to seal off the varicose vein, offering effective results with virtually no scarring. The treatment is comfortable and only takes about 45 minutes. You can even plan to go back to work the next day!
