Basic Breast Implant Maintenance
After your breast augmentation, Dr. Rifai will go over some of the most important things to remember about your new breasts. There are massage exercises you can do to reduce the likelihood of capsular contracture, and medication you will need to take to prevent post-surgery complications. Shopping for a new bra with adequate support will also be important.
To ensure the long-term health of your breast implants:
- Get MRIs of your silicone breast implants 3 years after surgery
- Continue to get MRIs of your silicone implants every 3 years
- See a doctor if you start feeling any pain in your breasts
- See a doctor if your implants start to feel hard
- Starting at age 40, begin getting annual mammograms
Silicone implants require MRIs every 3 years because it’s the only way to detect a rupture in the breast implants. If you get saline breast implants, you will be able to detect a rupture much faster, because your body will absorb the saline, resulting in a “deflated breast,” which you will want to get fixed with a breast implant replacement as soon as possible.
Detroit’s Breast Augmentation Location
The amount of time your implant will last can vary. There is no “expiration date” on your breast implants. In theory, they can last a lifetime if they remain intact while continuing to look and feel good. Many patients, however, decide to get their implants replaced as age and hormonal changes affect their bodies. If you decide that this is the right option for you, then Dr. Rifai can give you the adjustments you need.
