One of the most frequent questions our prospective breast augmentation patients ask is, “How long will silicone breast implants last?” The reason this is a common question is that there is quite a bit of information on the internet that says silicone breast implants must be replaced every five to ten years. But this is not necessarily true.

Silicone breast implants are designed to last approximately 15 years, but they sometimes last longer. They are designed to be very durable and safe. Sometimes situations arise during a person’s lifetime that warrant early removal or replacement of implants.

Common reasons silicone breast implants are removed or replaced early:

• Women who obtain large breast implants often decide later in life they no longer want them and therefore have them removed.
• Some breast implants begin to sag after several years and they must be either removed or replaced.
• Breast implants sometimes rupture and must be removed or replaced.
• Implants may develop wrinkles and/or ripples and need replacment.
