Your Guide to the Facelift

Humans have always had a fascination with eternal youth – and for good reason. Looking as young as you feel enhances self-confidence and brings positivity to every aspect of your life. The facelift is one of the most popular ways to rejuvenate the face so it reflects your inner energy and enthusiasm for life. If you’re considering a facelift, then it’s important to understand the ins and outs of what you can expect. Read on to learn more about the facelift with Dr. Rouchdi Rifai here at Birmingham Cosmetic Surgery.

What is a Facelift?

The facelift is a cosmetic surgical procedure that eliminates sagging facial skin and smooths the folds and wrinkles that form on the cheeks and jawline. It does so using small entry points on either side of the face along with extensive knowledge of the deep facial tissues. Done correctly, it helps give your face a more youthful appearance by lifting the skin and tissues to their natural youthful position. Also sometimes included in the facelift procedure is the neck lift, which helps combat sagging skin and excess fat on the neck.

Who is an Ideal Candidate for a Facelift?

Generally, suitable candidates for a facelift are individuals who:

  • Have realistic expectations for the procedure and a positive outlook on life
  • Do not smoke or are willing to quit smoking before and after surgery
  • Are of good health, without medical conditions that impede healing

There is no age limit for getting a facelift. However, most facelift patients are in their 40s to 60s, since this is the age span where significant wrinkles and laxity tend to occur. When considering a facelift, we recommend finding a qualified, board-certified cosmetic surgeon with extensive experience in this procedure. Although you’ll find many skilled surgeons in your area, finding one specializing in facial procedures can mean the difference between good results and incredible ones.

The Facelift Procedure

Every facelift is unique, so the process begins with a discussion with your board-certified cosmetic surgeon. During the consultation, you’ll discuss your goals for the procedure, your medical history, your current alcohol, tobacco, and drug use, and previous surgeries. The facelift procedure is done on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. Facelifts typically take 2-3 hours, depending on how extensive your procedure is.

In a traditional facelift, your cosmetic surgeon creates a tiny incision just in front of the ear and extends the cut to the hairline and behind the ear into the scalp. The skin is then gently lifted from the deep-seated facial muscles and fat. Your cosmetic surgeon will trim any excess skin and lift the deep facial tissues, restoring them to a more natural position with sutures. If you include a neck lift, a small incision is made under the chin to strengthen the underlying tissues of the neck.

Recovery After Facelift

After surgery, expect some bruising and swelling, which will subside after about two weeks. You may also experience tension and discomfort around the face and neck area, but this fades as well. You can resume light duties one week after surgery. However, avoiding strenuous activities for at least one month is recommended to ensure proper healing. Dr. Rifai will provide detailed instructions on your recovery to maximize your results.

Benefits of a Facelift Surgery

A facelift offers astounding benefits, including improving signs of aging and restoring a more youthful appearance. Opting for a facelift is one of the most effective ways to reverse the visible signs of aging and rejuvenate your appearance. Besides its cosmetic benefits, it can also enhance your confidence and self-esteem. To determine whether you are a suitable candidate for this procedure, seek advice from a qualified, board-certified cosmetic surgeon.
